The Brooklyn Cyclones - 2007 Postseason
|
NYPL Championship Series Preview – Brooklyn Cyclones vs. Auburn Doubledays
The Brooklyn Cyclones will take on the Auburn Doubledays in the best-of-three NY-Penn League Championship Series. Brooklyn’s greatest advantage lies in their pitching, which led the league in ERA, shutouts and hits allowed. Staff ace Dylan Owen had the league’s best record (9-1) and ERA (1.49) and shut down Staten Island in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series. C/1B Jason Jacobs, who had a league-leading 12 homers during the regular season, will shoulder the offensive load along with 1B/OF Lucas Duda. Duda hit .444 (4-9) with 5 RBI in the last series.
Auburn clinched its sixth consecutive Pinckney Division title this season. The streak represents the longest active playoff streak in the NYPL; however they have not captured an NYPL championship in that time. On offense, the Doubledays will rely on All-Star outfielders Benjamin Zeskind and Manny Rodriguez, who tied for the team lead with eight home runs each. Auburn’s pitching staff is especially stout, leading the league in strikeouts and owning the league’s third best ERA (3.43).

GAME 2: Brooklyn Cyclones v. Auburn Doubledays
The Brooklyn Cyclones lost consecutive games for only the sixth time this year, but this untimely occurrence cost them a New York Penn League Championship. Despite jumping to a quick lead on Micah Schilling’s leadoff homer in the first inning, the Cyclones lost 4-1 and were swept in the best-of-three series. Cyclones pitcher Michael Antonini took the loss, giving up two-run homers to both J.P. Arencibia and Darin Mastroianni. Doubledays starter Brett Cecil, who had pitched into the sixth inning in only one of his previous 13 starts, got the win after allowing just one run in a career-high seven innings pitched. The Cyclones offense managed only ten hits and two runs in the Championship Series after scoring 11 runs in a two game sweep of the Staten Island Yankees. Lucas Duda, the Cyclones clutch hitter against the Yankees, went 0-4 with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts against Auburn.
