2K Sports Classic
benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer

The college basketball season got off to a fantastic start during the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Tournament MVP Kyle Singler’s 15 points and eight rebounds 33 points led Duke to a 71-56 win over Michigan in the championship game. In the consolation game, UCLA defeated Southern Illinois by a score of 77-60.

Championship Game Recap

Duke 71 Michigan 56
Tournament MVP Kyle Singler scored 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Duke to a 71-56 win over Michigan in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Nolan Smith added 16 points for the Blue Devils, who led the game from the tip-off to the buzzer. Michigan’s Manny Harry led the Wolverines with 25 points, giving him a total of 96 points in the tournament’s four games.

Consolation Game Recap

UCLA 77 Southern Illinois 60
UCLA, led by senior Alfred Aboya’s 22 points and eight rebounds, defeated Southern Illinois 77-60 in the tournament’s consolation game. UCLA guards Darren Collison and Josh Shipp also added 17 points and 11 points, respectively. Despite being out-rebounded by Southern Illinois, UCLA easily dispatched the Salukis due to a 20-2 run to open the second half. Southern Illinois guard Kevin Dillard led the team with 14 points and point guard Bryan Mullins contributed seven points and a game-high eight assists.

Semifinals Recaps

Duke 83 Southern Illinois 58
Despite struggling in the early going of their semifinal game, Duke defeated Southern Illinois 83-58. Junior Gerald Henderson scored all of his 20 points in the second half, to lead Duke to victory. Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer each added 13 points, as four Duke players scored in double digits. The Salukis kept the game competitive until about nine minutes left in the second half, when the high powered Duke offense became too much to handle. Carlton Fey led the scoring for Southern Illinois, netting a game-high 20 points. Saluki guard Kevin Dillard added 10 points and seven assists in the losing effort.

Michigan 55 UCLA 52
Michigan stunned #4 UCLA in the second semifinal game, defeating the highly touted Bruins 55-52. Michigan guard Stu Douglass hit a three pointer with 4:16 remaining in the second half to take a 49-48 lead. Michigan then stripped UCLA guard Darren Collison on the defensive end and scored a lay-up to extend the lead to three. Despite UCLA’s best effort, they were unable to overcome the deficit. Michigan forward DeShawn Sims led the scoring with a game high 18 points and guard Manny Harris contributed 15 points. Darren Collison and Jrue Holiday each added 13 points in the loss.

Coaches vs. Cancer was founded in 1993 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) dedicated to fighting cancer through increase research, patient services and prevention education. Since 1995, the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer and the Gazelle Group have raised more than $4 million to support the fight against cancer.
