138th Belmont Stakes

The 2006 Belmont Stakes

Date: Saturday, June 10, 2006
Place: Belmont Park, Elmont, NY
Time: 12:00 PM

A horse named Jazil won the Belmont Stakes, capturing the final leg in horse racing's Triple Crown. Ridden by 18-year-old jockey Fernando Jara, the three-year-old colt darted into the lead around the final turn and held off all challengers down the final stretch for a 1-¼ length victory. Finishing second was pre-race favorite Bluegrass Cat, followed by Sunriver who placed third in the 12-horse field.

It was the first time in six years that the Belmont field did not contain either the reigning Preakness Stakes or Kentucky Derby champion. Owners of Preakness champion Bernardini held out the colt after running three races in rapid succession. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro retired from racing after sustaining a career-ending injury in the Preakness.

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest race of the Triple Crown. Known as the true “Test of the Champion”, the Belmont Stakes has dashed the hopes of three Triple Crown hopefuls--Smarty Jones, Funny Cide and War Emblem--in the last five years.
