AVP Brooklyn Open

AVP Brooklyn Open
Date: August 23-26, 2007
Location: Coney Island, Brooklyn

More than 150 of the top professional beach volleyball players traveled to Coney Island to compete in the AVP Brooklyn Open. Fans got a chance to see Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh take home their 11th win of the season by defeating Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh in the women’s final (21-18, 21-16). In the men’s final, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers endured a tough battle against Aaron Wachtfogel and Scott Wong, eventually picking up the win (23-21, 24-22) and their ninth title of the year.

Rogers battled through a back injury suffered while lifting a bag of balls a few days before the tournament, and he and Dalhausser won the title playing out of the contender’s bracket after losing their first Saturday match to John Hyden and Brad Keenan. May-Treanor and Walsh, who lost last week in Boston to Youngs and Branagh, have 16 total wins this season, including five on the FIVB circuit.

The enthusiasm of the Brooklyn fans did not go unnoticed by the players. "The fan support has been awesome," said Youngs after she and Branagh advanced to their third consecutive women's final. "They have a really great beach volleyball fan base here.” Wachtfogel enjoyed people-watching throughout his stay in the Big Apple and took the F train every morning to Coney Island from a loft in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. "I put my iTunes on and just cruised,” said the Redondo Beach, CA native. “It's entertaining — I sit there, put some music on, watch people walk to the beach. You get to see a bunch of different kinds of people."

The Tour’s next stop is in Cincinnati, before heading to Las Vegas for the Gods and Goddesses of the Beach competition at Caesars Palace.
