The FDNY defeated a team of Israeli basketball legends by a score of 71-57 in a charity basketball game at Columbia University. The game featured several prominent figures in Israeli basketball including Tal Brody, Doron Jamchy, Boaz Yannai, Willie Sims, Motti Daniel, and Tomer Steinhower. Former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis was named the celebrity coach of the Israeli Legends team. Paul Peterson powered the FDNY past the Legends finishing with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds in taking home the team MVP honors. Doron Jamchy led the legends with 12 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds, earning him the Israeli team’s MVP award.
The event was organized by the American Friends of Migdal Ohr, an organization that provides shelter and education for over 6,500 orphaned children in Israel, in conjunction with the New York City Sports Commission, the America-Israel Friendship League, the Consulate General of Israel in New York, the Jewish Community Relations Council and The New York Board of Rabbis. Proceeds from the event benefited the children of Migdal Ohr and the Thomas R. Elsasser Fund—created to support the families of NYC Firefighters who died Non-Line of Duty as active members of the FDNY. During halftime festivities, a representative of Midgal Ohr presented the Thomas R. Elsasser Fund with a check for $25,000.
