The

Island, NY - Today, Staten Island Community Board #1's Youth Committee donated
50 new hard cover nature books to Give a Kid a Book - a community service
project begun by PS 18 students Jaydah and Aniyah Curry who wanted to share
their books with other children. Their mother, Sara Matos is helping them with
the project.
Said Tony Marra, Chairman of Community Board #1, "This is a
great project. I applaud Jaydah and Aniyah for their willingness to share their
passion for reading with others. Community Board # 1 is ready to help any way
that we can."
The students and their mother began collecting books in
July. Their goal is to collect 5,000 new or gently used books appropriate for
children ages 1-8 years old so they can be shared.
"We like to read,"
said Jaydah, age 8, "but there are children who can't read because they don't
have any books. If we share our books, everyone will be able to
read."
Aniyah, age 7, agrees, "Sharing books is fun. That way you always
have a new story to read."
Their mother, Sara Matos is very proud of her
daughters. "This project is as grass roots as it gets yet we have managed to
collect 3,832 books toward our goal of 5,000 thanks to the generosity of the
Staten Island community. I want to thank
Community Board #1 Youth Committee Chair, Joanne Pentangelo, for her on going
support and Board Chairman Anthony Marra for allowing us to use the office as a
drop off point.
"I want to thank the members of Community Board #1's
Youth Committee for taking an active role in this project," said Joanne
Pentangelo, Chair of CB1's Youth Committee."We chose to donate books about
animals and nature because children love animals and nature, and giving children
what they like is a great way to encourage them to read."
Donations may
be dropped off at Community Board #1 - 1Edgewater Plaza - Room 217, Staten Island, New
York - (718) 981-6900 between the hours of 10am and 4pm,
Monday through Friday. The Deadline for book collection is October 31, 2008.
Items needed include: New or gently used books appropriate for ages 1- 8
years old; postage stamps and plain white letter size envelopes.
