Ed Ott is the Executive Director of the New York City Central Labor
Council, a chartered body of the AFL-CIO representing over 1.3 million
working men and women from 400 affiliated labor organizations throughout
New York City. Dedicating himself for over three decades in the “fight for
fairness” within the labor movement, Ed believes “as long as we have
economic inequality, we have work to do.”
Raised in a union household, Ed first became active in the labor
movement as an organizer for 1199SEIU. He went on to hold leadership
positions in the Public Employees Federation and the Oil, Chemical &
Atomic Workers Union, and served as political director of Communications
Workers of America Local 1180. Prior to his appointment as
Executive Director, Ed served as the Central Labor Council’s Public Policy
and Worker Education Director joining the organization in 1996. In this
position, Ed was responsible for directing and establishing the political
and legislative agenda for the labor council, coordinating citywide labor
initiatives, and supporting statewide and federal pro-worker
issues. Ed played a pivotal role in major pro-worker
legislative initiatives including the passage of the Living Wage bill, the
HealthCare Security Act, campaign finance reform legislation, Social
Security protection, and numerous pension and worker safety protection
legislation. Ed has worked closely with the Consortium For
Worker Education in support of labor workforce development programs
designed to prepare and train hundreds of thousands of workers for jobs.
He has been instrumental in securing critical public funding for worker
training and safety programs. Ed recently served on Mayor
Michael Bloomberg’s Sustainability Advisory Board created to advise the
City on environmentally sound policies and practices. Ed is also a Board
Member of NYC Apollo Alliance a national project committed to reducing our
nation’s dependence on oil. Ed is a founder and editorial
board member for the New Labor Forum, a unique journal dedicated to
labor’s economic, social and political issues. He is also active on the
CUNY Labor Advisory Committee. Married to wife Deborah, they
are the proud parents of two sons, Nicholas and Zachary. They reside in
the middle working class community of Montclair, New Jersey. Return to Members
