SBS Announces the First Six Training Funds Awards Totaling $660,161.

On December 20, SBS awarded six employers a total of $660,161 in the first round of NYC Business Solutions Training Funds.  Pooling a total of $4 million in annual funding from CEO and WIA, Training Funds is an enhanced version of the now-retired Training Grants program.  The six projects selected for funding are projected to provide occupational training for 565 employees of New York City firms, including 129 new hires.  Ninety-nine percent of trainees are expected to get wage gains. 

New Awardees:

  • Alpha Animal Hospital is the largest veterinary hospital in Staten Island.  The company will receive $104,420 to train 30 employees—including 12 new hires—to be technicians, medical records supervisors, and receptionists.  Several trainees will also receive ESL training.  Wage gains for current workers are projected range from 20% to 67%.  Alpha Animal Hospital will contribute $164,119 toward the cost of the training, which will allow the business to continue to expand and attract new customers.
     
  • Dundy Glass Mirror Corp is a glass and mirror fabricator located in Jamaica, Queens.  The company will receive $52,300 to train 10 employees—including 7 new hires—in ways to cut, bevel, and laminate glass.  Wage gains for employees are projected to be 78%.  Dundy Glass Mirror Corp will contribute $30,600 toward the cost of training, which will meet growing demand for laminated glass products.
     
  • GM Printing is a printing firm headquartered in Manhattan that recently purchased a site in Long Island City, Queens.  The company will receive $11,859 to train 10 workers to use a specialized printer the company has recently acquired.  Wage gains are projected to range from 10% to 20%.  GM Printing will contribute $7,139 toward the cost of training, which will allow the company to upgrade its technology and improve its productivity. 
  • Lockman, Inc is a security equipment installation firm based in Richmond Hill, Queens.  The company will receive $11,920 to provide security system installation training to 12 workers.  Wage gains are projected to range from 5% to 12%.  Lockman, Inc will contribute $7,148 toward the cost of training, which will allow the company to expand its service coverage and tap new clients.
     
  • Mini-Circuits Laboratory is a manufacturing firm based in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn that produces signal processing components for industrial, medical, and aeronautic uses.  The company will receive $400,000 to train 462 workers—including 92 new hires—in skills such as lean enterprise management, quality control, and customer service.  Wage gains are projected to range from 4% to 21%.  The company will contribute $963,687 toward the cost of training, which will allow the company to meet excess demand for the company’s products domestically and abroad.
      
  • UncommonGoods is a retailer based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn that sells novelty gifts and home accessories.  The company will receive $79,662 to train 41 workers—including 12 new hires—in supervisory and computer-based skills.  Several employees will also receive work-readiness training in literacy and communication.  Wage gains are projected to range from 6% to 27%.  The company will contribute $60,000 toward the cost of training, which will allow the company to expand its workforce to meet the excess demand for its products.
