NEW CLASSES BEGIN FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF SMALL BUSINESS SERVICES’ STRATEGIC STEPS FOR GROWTH PROGRAMS

Nine-Month Premier Management Training Programs Provide Skills, Training and Professional Networking Opportunities to Minority and Women Entrepreneurs and Media Professionals

Classes begin for the two Strategic Steps for Growth programs offered by the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS), Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at New York University (NYU) Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Strategic Steps for Growth is a premiere management training program that incorporates an award-winning curriculum developed by Interise, a Boston-based nonprofit, which is also currently offered in 32 U.S. communities. The program provides a path for accelerating growth through entrepreneurial education, connections, and access to new markets. Two programs are available, one serving minority and women-owned businesses, and an industry specific Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment, which focuses on entrepreneurs in the City’s rapidly growing media and entertainment industry.

The NYU Stern Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosts both programs and facilitates the class sessions. Currently in its fourth year, Strategic Steps for Growth has graduated 55 business owners who have collectively secured over $92 million in new government contracts, over $6.4 million in new financing and created over 330 new jobs. Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment is in its second year, with 16 graduates from the first year securing over $1.5 million in new contracts, $26,000 in new financing and hired 13 new employees. Program participants work with business experts and fellow entrepreneurs to define a clear pathway for their company’s growth and learn the strategic skills needed to run a growing business. Participants use their own businesses as case studies, and by the end of the program, graduates have developed a custom three-year Strategic Growth Action PlanTM for their business. The programs also provide participants with a network that offers support for every aspect of business operation after graduation.

To be eligible for the Strategic Steps for Growth program, businesses must be certified with the City as a Minority- or Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE), headquartered or have a main office within the five boroughs of New York City, have at least two full-time employees, annual gross revenues between $150,000 and $10 million, and been in operation for at least three years. Businesses eligible for the Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment program, are media and entertainment businesses that are headquartered or have a main office within the five boroughs of New York City, have at least one full-time employee, annual gross revenues between $150,000 and $10 million, and been in operation for at least one year.
