The New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS), the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), and the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) launched the first class of the Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment program, expanded for small business owners in the media and entertainment industry. Using an award-winning curriculum developed by Interise, Strategic Steps for Growth is a nine-month executive business management program that allows small business owners to use their own business as a case study and connects them to a support network of business advisors, other entrepreneurs, and public/private-sector resources to help their business grow. The 41 graduates from previous Strategic Steps for Growth Minority- and Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) program classes have collectively secured $1.9 million in new financing, created over 240 new jobs and won over $64 million in government contracts.
“We are pleased to be working with the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment to expand our proven programs to help entrepreneurs in the media and entertainment industry grow their businesses,” said Small Business Services Commissioner, Rob Walsh. “Supporting entrepreneurs in media and entertainment will help create jobs for New Yorkers, and keep this already growing industry strong in NYC.”
“At the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, we’re committed to diversifying our local media and entertainment industry,” said Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver. “This program and our partnership with the Department of Small Business Services will continue our efforts to help diverse New Yorkers grow their businesses and advance in their careers in these evolving fields.”
The Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment course is facilitated by Professor Al Lieberman, Executive Director of NYU Stern’s Entertainment, Media & Technology Program. Participants work with business experts, university professors and each other to learn the strategic skills they need to run a growing business and develop a three-year growth plan. The program also provides participants with a business network that offers support beyond the classroom.
