Nine-Month Premier Management Training Program Provides Skills, Training and Professional Networking Opportunities to NYC Entrepreneurs

Manhattan – The New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at New York University (NYU) Leonard N. Stern School of Business today launched the second year of Strategic Steps for Growth, a premiere management training program for minority and women business owners. It incorporates an award-winning curriculum developed by Interise, a Boston-based nonprofit, which is also currently offered in 31 U.S. communities. The program provides a clear path for accelerating growth through entrepreneurial education, connections, and access to new markets. The Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosts the program, with an NYU entrepreneurship professor facilitating it.

Participants work with business experts, university professors and each other to clearly define a pathway for company’growth. They learn the strategic skills needed to run a growing business and by the end of the program, each will create a custom three-year Strategic Growth Action PlanTM. The program also provides participants with a business network that offers support for every aspect of their business operation going forward.

Upon completion of Strategic Steps for Growth, last year’s founding class of 15 entrepreneurs collectively secured $13.5 million in new government contracts, $1.2 million in new financing and created 40 new jobs.

To be eligible for the program, businesses must be certified with the City as a Minority or Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE). In 2005, Mayor Bloomberg signed legislation creating the M/WBE program to help certified businesses access contracting opportunities and build capacity. In the first four years of the program, certified M/WBEs have won more than $1.9 billion in prime and subcontracts with the City of New York.

Strategic Steps for Growth applications are not being accepted at this time. But interested candidates can e-mail to be placed on a notification list for the next round of recruiting. More information is also available at

This year, the following 31 entrepreneurs, that collectively generate $39 million in gross annual revenue and employ over 730 New Yorkers, will participate; classes begin May 24th at NYU.
