SBS Announces Eight NYC Business Solutions Training Funds Awards Totaling Over $ 1 Million

On October 28, SBS awarded ten businesses a total of $1,004,403 in NYC Business Solutions Training Funds. NYC Business Solutions Training Funds is a business driven training grant program allowing employers to develop customized training programs to increase the skills and salaries of their employees. SBS developed Training Funds in conjunction with the Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO). The ten projects selected for funding will provide occupational and work-readiness training for 870 New Yorkers, including 184 new hires, the most trainees of any Training Funds round since the program's inception. Approximately 638 of 684 trainees who are already employed are expected to earn wage gains that will average 9.3%. Businesses from all five boroughs were represented in this funding round. On November 3, SBS will announce the launch of the new round of NYC Business Solutions Training Funds. Up to $1.5 million is available to employers in this round, with preapplications due on November 21, 2008.

The following organizations were awarded NYC Business Solutions Training Funds:

  • Au Bon Pain is a fast-casual bakery/cafe chain with 35 cafés in New York City and plans to open 5 new cafes in the next year. The company will receive $161,490 to train 300 employees – including 25 new hires – in customer service and leadership training. Average wage gains for 100% of current workers are projected to be 5%. Au Bon Pain will contribute $134,840 toward the cost of training, which will help expand its pool of experienced crew members and reduce staff turnover.
  • Diversified Heat Transfer is a heating and cooling coil manufacturer located in Queens' Maspeth Industrial Business Zone. The company will receive $99,250 to train 53 employees in lean manufacturing, quality assurance, and CNC machine operation. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 4%. Diversified Heat Transfer will contribute $59,639 toward the cost of training, which will help increase overall plant efficiency and increase profitability.
  • Felix Storch, Inc. is an appliance manufacturer and distributor located in the Bronx's Hunt's Point Industrial Business Zone. The company will receive $242,919 to train 68 employees – including 10 new hires – in lean manufacturing, customer service, and remedial math and English. Average wage gains for 87% of current workers are projected to be 10%. Felix Storch, Inc. will contribute $202,750 toward the cost of training, which will help increase productivity.
  • Madame Paulette is a garment and textile cleaning business located in Long Island City, Queens. The company will receive $51,011 to train 34 employees–including 3 new hires– in customer service, performance management, and sewing, pressing, and dry cleaning techniques. Average wage gains are projected to be 7%. Madame Paulette will contribute $30,829 toward the cost of training, which will boost on-time delivery and increase profitability and productivity.
  • National Reprographics Inc. is a woman-owned document management and graphic reproduction communications company located in Manhattan. The company will receive $39,300 to train 54 employees in customer service and effective management practices. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 4%. National Reprographics, Inc. will contribute $33,380 toward the cost of training, which will help improve customer service and reduce production errors.
  • Paper Enterprises, Inc. is a wholesale distributor of paper and plastic products and janitorial supplies located in the Bronx's Port Morris Industrial Business Zone. The company will receive $55,862 to train 15 employees – including 5 new hires – in commercial drivers' license safety, policy, and procedure. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 41%. Paper Enterprises, Inc. will contribute $46,553 toward the cost of training, which will be crucial for service expansion.
  • Rucci Oil Company Inc. is a home heating oil and fuel company located in Staten Island's North Shore Empire Zone. The firm will receive $21,840 to train 10 employees in basic principles of heating and air conditioning, diagnostic repair and preventative maintenance. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 20%. Rucci Oil Company Inc. will contribute $12,480 toward the cost of training, which will help this small business remain competitive amidst rising oil prices.
  • Tri Component Products is a manufacturer of value-added products for automotive and commercial vehicles located in the Bronx. The company will receive $80,216 to train 51 employees– including 1 new hire – in ISO 9001, lean manufacturing, and bar coding. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 11%. Tri Component Products will contribute $116,643 toward the cost of training, which will help the company remain competitive in the global manufacturing market and maintain sales overseas.
  • Voila Bakeries, Inc. is a manufacturer of fresh-baked pastries and breads located in North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone. The company will receive $92,057 to train 31 employees in operations management, lean manufacturing, and Six Sigma applications. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 6%. Voila Bakeries, Inc. will contribute $52,718 toward the cost of training, which will improve production efficiencies and reduce staff turnover.
  • Wichcraft Operating LLC owns and operates a chain of 11 gourmet sandwich shops throughout New York City and plans to open two new stores in New York in the coming year. The company will receive $160,458 to train 254 employees – including 140 new hires – in English as a Second Language, cashier, kitchen assistant, and management training. Average wage gains for current workers are projected to be 29%. Wichcraft Operating LLC will contribute $133,808 toward the cost of training, which will help the company decrease employee attrition, improve food quality, and reduce waste.
