The Rockaways

Prompted by the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, merchants in the Rockaways sought to form a group that could advocate for small businesses, access available resources, and improve conditions of the local commercial districts. SBS has been supporting the formation and development of such an organization. With SBS support and significant merchant involvement, the Beach 116th Street Partnership was formally incorporated as a non-profit organization, with an elected Board of Directors and new Executive Director, Krzysztof Sadlej. The Beach 116th Street Partnership has been instrumental in organizing and implementing many of the recovery programs that have helped Beach 116th Street grow stronger than ever before.

  • Urban Canvas – We’ve been working with construction sites to install artwork which beautifies these areas while recovery and resilience work progresses. By making construction sites and temporary structures more attractive, the neighborhood maintains its welcoming feel while undergoing important recovery efforts.
  • Increased Sanitation – We're enhancing the Clean Streets Team to make Beach 116th Street and its surrounding areas more welcoming. With three additional hires, new Beach 116th Street Partnership branding, new fences and lot cleanings, the commercial corridor has become much cleaner, and thus, much more inviting to businesses, residents and visitors.
  • Improved Safety – By partnering with the 100th Precinct, we've implemented several important security enhancements for the Beach 116th Street neighborhood. With regular NYPD patrols, barricades of empty lots, gating off key alleys, and efforts to reduce panhandling, Beach 116th Street is well on its way to an even more safe and inviting neighborhood brand.
  • Streetscape Improvements – Our partners at the NYC Department of Transportation have installed 16 new planters along Beach 116th Street, which will be maintained and kept free of graffiti by the Department of Parks and Recreation. We are also replacing loose pavement stones, and we've worked with Citi Community Development to paint a mural facing the Beach at 116th street, welcoming visitors into the corridor.
  • District Marketing – In order to supplement the Beach 116th Street Partnership's marketing efforts, SBS is highlighting Rockaway businesses in other parts of the city. We've featured ads in print media, subway, phone kiosks, and bus shelters and reached more than 81 million people. Featured Rockaway businesses include: Blue Bungalow, Cuisine by Claudette, Rockapup, Station & Liquors Wine, Paninico Café, Hot Yoga, Brown's Hardware, and Surfside Bagels.
