The Pope arrived in New York City on October 4th at the Wall Street Heliport.

On the first day of his Holiness' visit, the Pope addressed the United
Nations General Assembly, at a gala gathering of World Leaders, which was celebrating the U.N.'s 50th Anniversary in New York City.

The next day, the Pope visited Queens Aqueduct Raceway where he was greeted by Mayor Giuliani and the First Lady before delivering Mass on a brilliant morning.

The Mass

On the third day, the Pope delivered Mass and celebrated the
Eucharist in Central Park, our City's crown jewel.

The Mayor addressed the crowd and congratulated New Yorkers of all faiths in joining together to welcome His Holiness Pope John Paul II and emphasized that the Pope's timeless message of brotherhood and unity speaks particularly to New Yorkers because we live in the World's most diverse City.

Over 120,000 New Yorkers attended the mass where His Holiness proclaimed New York City as the "Capital of the World".

The Mayor and his Family joined countless other Catholics in accepting communion.

Later that day, the Mayor and his family continued to St. Patrick's Cathedral,
another beautiful New York City Landmark, for a Papal Rosary Service..
St. Patrick's Cathedral, built from 1858 - 1879, is the seat of the Archbishop of New York, John Cardinal O'Connor and it is the largest Catholic Cathedral in the United States.
