Mayor Giuliani at Ceremony

New York City is Thriving

By Mayor Rudy Giuliani

Between the Yankees' gutsy performance in the World Series, the election of a new Mayor, and the running of the 32nd Annual New York City Marathon, New York is thriving with feelings of renewal, perseverance, and determination. By going about our daily lives, New Yorkers continue to show the world that we will not give in to fear. We are taking full advantage of the blessings of freedom, and are setting an excellent example of how even in these trying times, we can move ahead.

It is a true testament to our resolve that only seven weeks after the worst attack on American soil, New York turned out in the millions to support marathon runners from throughout the world. Our enthusiasm was rewarded by seeing the Yankees play in some of the most thrilling World Series games in the history of our national pastime. And our strong determination not to let terrorists undermine our principles of freedom, has already reaped many benefits.

When the Yankees play in the World Series - as they have for five of the last six years - our local economy receives approximately $128 million in direct and indirect revenues. Similarly, this year's marathon is expected to have as strong of an economic impact on our City as last year's marathon - with competitors from 99 different nations and all 50 states - which generated more than $110 million in economic activity. Both of these major sporting events mean as much to our City's economy as they mean to our sense of pride in knowing that we live in the Capital of the World.

We have shown the world that our faith in democracy and the blessings of freedom are unwavering even in the face of the most senseless and brutal of attacks. As our brave men and women in the military defend our freedom around the world, New Yorkers have shown their appreciation by voting for new leaders and by making their voices heard on many issues, including revisions to the City Charter. Democracy's foundation in this country is simply too strong for anyone to shake, and New Yorkers have demonstrated this fact by living their lives in freedom and paying tribute to all of those who risk and have given their lives to defend it.

As we continue to honor the fallen victims of the World Trade Center attacks, we have felt and shown a vast array of emotions. Over the last couple of months we have had much to cry about and much to cheer about, but the one constant throughout this entire time has been our immense feeling of pride - pride for what we've endured and accomplished. As Mayor, I have never been more proud to represent this great City, and I am confident that our perseverance and determination will bring us even more success in the years to come.
