SPOTLIGHT ON: BROOKLYN!

From Greenpoint to Coney Island, each Brooklyn neighborhood has a unique flavor and character. There are many resources in the City Hall Library to help you find your way around the borough.

The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn by Citizens Committee for New York City surveys 90 neighborhoods complete with maps, history and basic facts. The Brooklyn Neighborhood Book, published by The Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn, Inc. is a paperback with short profiles and drawings.

When Brooklyn Was the World: 1920 to 1957 by Elliot Wollensky. official Borough Historian at time of publication (1987), offers glimpses of Brooklyn through its neighborhoods and the people who lived there. Chapters cover subways, schools, ethnic communities and more plus there are many photos to pore over. Brooklyn: an Illustrated History by Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier is an exploration of Coney Island, Brooklyn Navy Yard, various neighborhoods with photos of the people who lived there and many famous sites.

Neighborhood files in the vertical files collection contain newspaper clippings, journal articles, pamphlets and other materials about Brooklyn in general and particular neighborhoods. City agency reports include Historic District Designation Reports from the Landmarks Preservation Commission and Department of City Planning materials on renewal and revitalization plans for neighborhoods.

The Brooklyn Cookbook, compiled by Lyn Stallworth and Rod Kennedy, Jr., presents 250 recipes from cooks in many Brooklyn neighborhoods and institutions from diverse ethnic. religious and racial backgrounds. You can learn to make calzone and fried calamari (Italian); sweet noodle pudding (Jewish), beef gulasz (Polish) and banana nut bread (Caribbean) among others. All in all, a tasty array of resources.
