THE VITAL RECORDS COLLECTION AT THE MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES
The Municipal Archives maintains records of births reported in the five Boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island), prior to 1910; deaths reported prior to 1949; and marriages reported prior to 1950. For a complete description of the vital records collection, please see a list of the Municipal Archives Holdings. Vital record copies are $15.00 each; see complete fee schedule.
For birth records after 1909, and death records after 1948, contact the New York City Department of Health.
For marriage records after 1949 contact the City Clerk.

NOTE: Due to the volume of requests, the current processing time for a vital records request is eight to twelve weeks. Also, Health Department Marriage Certificates from 1866 to 1937 can be requested online using the links above. Requests for Marriage License Records from 1908 to 1949 can currently only be requested by Mail Order using this form. Additionally, the requested certificate copies will be sent via regular mail; there is not an e-mail service for vital records.

You may search for birth, death and marriage records in-person at the Municipal Archives. All birth, death, and marriage records, and the indexes that pertain to them, are on microfilm for easy access. There is no charge to use the microfilm. Certified copies may be ordered over-the-counter and will be printed while you wait. The fee is $11.00 per copy. There is not a self-service copy service for vital records. Our hours are available here.
