The Forensic Mental Health Unit (FMHU) helps probation clients who have been diagnosed with serious mental illnesses obtain appropriate services. FMHU provides clients with information on what is required by the courts, as well as services to help them live independent and crime-free lives.
FMHU Officers help their clients adjust to probation supervision while also addressing the client’s mental health needs. This includes working individually with clients and tracking their progress, sometimes through periods of hospitalizations and homelessness.
FMHU has partnerships with various mental health treatment providers, and officers are trained in understanding the client’s medications and their possible side effects. When there have been changes in the client’s behavior due to their prescribed medication, the officers are often the first to notice. The officers also build relationships with the client’s family support system.
