The Department of Probation offers interns an
opportunity to learn by doing a wide range of meaningful activities in the
following academic areas: Public Administration, Research/Evaluation, Criminal
Justice, Human Services, Social Work, Law, Pre-Law, Counseling,
Sociology, Psychology, Human Resource Management, Information Technology, and Management Analysis Planning.
College interns are asked to commit a minimum of 10
hours per week for a period of three months to one year.
Human Resources Internships
This assignment requires a minimum of three days a week, at least four hours each workday per semester (a full-time assignment would be preferred, if possible). The intern's duties include "special project" work within the Human Resources area that would include exposure to:
Performance evaluation process
HR information system design,
development, and implementation
Compensation and benefits
A variety of ad hoc assignments as they arise.
The intern will report directly to the Assistant Commissioner of Human Resources and Labor Relations and will work closely with all of the HR staff on various assignments, as well as interact with operations staff on a regular basis.
Education Requirements:
A student working towards a Bachelors
Degree in Human Resources or a related field with the intent of pursuing a
career in HR
A graduate student would be considered
but is not "preferred" for this assignment
PC skills and familiarity with MS Office
applications is very important
Must exhibit a high level of commitment
and professionalism toward the assignment and come prepared to work and learn
Strong communication skills, as well as the ability to interact with people.
Office of Information Technology
Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Web page design: CSS, HTML
Java frameworks: Ibatis; hibernate; ant;
etc...
XML IDE's: xml;spy; stylus studio
.NET frameworks: zedgraphs; dotnetmuke,
etc...
Concepts represented by national

Perform editing changes when required to
the Agency's intranet Web pages, such as the online newsletter
Provide assistance at the help desk
supporting, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as hardware issues
Knowledge of Java Language and VB.net
Knowledge of XML, XSL, and JavaScript
Knowledge of personal computer hardware
and operating system
Provide administrative assistance to the Chief
Information Officer, Director of Application Development, and Director of
Networking.
Installation, maintenance, and repair of
workstations and printers.
Network router, switch, and firewall configuration and maintenance.
Law Students Internships
The New York City Department of Probation is
seeking students(s) from Law Schools to intern at the General Counsel's
Office. Student(s) are expected to work no more than 20 hours per week; and the
duration of the internship is three months.
The General Gounsel's Office of New York City Department
of Probation is located at 33 Beaver Street, New York, NY 10004. This office
handles all the Litigation cases in cooperation with the New York City Law
Department. Additionally, the General Counsel's Office monitors all VOP appeals;
responds to FOIA's; and is involved in Contracts, Memoranda of Understanding,
Stipulations, Labor disputes, and Discrimination complaints. Students interning
at 33 Beaver Street will do research, draft Memoranda of Law on issues relating
to law practice, prepare cases for trial, and work on special projects.
In addition to the main office, there are four field offices in
the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island. The field offices are primarily
involved in violation enforcement. They represent the department in prosecuting
violation of probation against defendants who fail to comply with the conditions
of probation. The field office also counsels probation officers in Family and
Adult Court conferences. Student(s) who are interning in one of our field
offices may be involved in preparing cases for violation hearings, gather
evidence, reviewing Court records and interviewing witnesses. They would also
accompany Department attorneys to court and interact with Court Personnel, the
Office of the District Attorney, and other governmental agencies.
Students will have access to LexisNexis and will learn
Time Matters, a legal case management software.
Management Analysis Planning Research Assistant Intern
Generate population profile reports using Microsoft access and Excel
Create graphs on Excel data
Create electronic spreadsheets for population profiling and statistical analysis
Input data in appropriate databases and programs such as Quickbooks and Peachtree
Compile the data from a variety of sources into departmental reports under supervision
Work with analysts to produce a variety of statistical and case detail reports, graphs, and maps
Establish and maintain updated files, records, and other departmental documentation
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned including providing administrative support for department/division
