Stronger Buildings

Building-level improvements are a critical component within the multi-layered strategy outlined in A Stronger, More Resilient New York. Ultimately, safe buildings and viable commercial districts will be a boon to the entire city's population, create jobs, and improve the lives of all New Yorkers. New York City has over 68,000 buildings in the current 100-year floodplain that vary greatly in use and construction. Addressing the risk in vulnerable coastal areas means not only setting better standards for new construction to protect from flooding, wind, and prolonged power outage, but offering ways to retrofit the city’s existing buildings and protect the residents and businesses that inhabit them.
