The City has set ambitious recycling goals and is putting an increasing percentage of its solid waste stream to beneficial use. In doing so, New York will not just be exporting in a manner that is cost-effective, environmentally responsible, and sensitive to its local communities: it will simply be exporting less. Equally as important, the City is eliminating its reliance on a network of land-based transfer stations and long-haul trucking to export residential solid waste, and in doing so is beginning to address the community impacts of the current network. The City is also taking bold actions with respect to commercial solid waste. It seeks to eliminate the impact of trucks wherever possible.
