MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES SECTION OF UNION TUNRPIKE AFTER REVEREND FRANK STRASSFELD

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 651, sponsored by Council Members Leffler, O'Donovan and Povman, would name Union Turnpike, between 210th and 211th Streets in Queens, as "Reverend Frank Strassfeld Turnpike."

Frank Strassfeld was born in Poland on December 26, 1922 and migrated to the United States in 1935. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and after the war became very active in the Hollis Hills Jewish Center.

At the Center, Mr. Strassfeld was in charge of religious activities and daily services. In recognition of his many years of service, the Hollis Hills Jewish Center recently dedicated its main sanctuary as the Reverend Frank E. Strassfeld Sanctuary. In addition to his work at the center, he volunteered his time at the Samuel Field YM-YWCA, and at the Booth Memorial Hospital Silvercrest Convalescent Home. Frank Strassfeld died on November 11, 1998.

In recognition of his many years of service to the Hollis Hills Jewish Center and to Queens County, it is fitting that Union Turnpike between 210th and 211th Streets be named "Reverend Frank Strassfeld Turnpike." For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
