Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this evening hosted the annual Holiday reception for Survivors of the Shield, families of police officers and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, at Gracie Mansion. During the reception children were treated to face painting, puppet shows and Holiday gifts.
"It's a pleasure and an honor to be with you all this evening as we celebrate the Holiday Season," said Mayor Giuliani. "This annual holiday party, which is held on the 11th anniversary of the founding of Survivors Of The Shield, serves as a symbol of our enduring love and respect for the families of the men and women who lost their in the line of duty, while protecting their fellow their fellow citizens. New Yorkers throughout the City benefit from the sacrifices of your loved ones and for this we are thankful. Through your continuing show of strength and love you are setting a wonderful example for all the families of our City. On behalf of all New Yorkers I hope you all have a happy Holiday Season and Happy New Year."
The Mayor was joined at this evening's reception by Colin Quinn of Saturday Night Live, New York City Police Commissioner Howard Safir, New York Fire Department Commissioner Thomas Von Essen, New York City Parks and Recreation Department Commissioner Henry J. Stern, Congresswoman Sue Kelly, and President of the Congress of Racial Equality Roy Innis.
