STATEMENT BY MAYOR GIULIANI ON BOARD OF REGENTS VOTE ENDING REMEDIATION AT CUNY SENIOR COLLEGES

"I congratulate Chancellor Carl Hayden and the Board of Regents for their vote today to affirm the CUNY Trustees' decision to raise academic standards. The vote taken today is another critical step in making sure that CUNY students are given the education that they will require to compete and succeed in the next millennium.

I want to thank CUNY Chair Herman Badillo and Vice-Chair Benno Schmidt for their leadership and commitment to restoring the value of a CUNY degree, and for their efforts in working with the Regents to secure today's successful vote to end remediation in CUNY senior college degree programs. CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein also deserves great credit for his commitment to improving CUNY and raising standards throughout the university.

Today's vote shows that CUNY has now turned an important corner in working to make sure that each of its students receives a first class education."
