MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES SECTION OF CROSS BAY BOULEVARD "GEORGE MEANY WAY"

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 632, sponsored by Council Members Stabile, Abel, Golden, Ognibene and six of their colleagues would name Cross Bay Boulevard, between 158th and 159th Avenues in Queens "George Meany Boulevard."

George Meany was born in New York City on August 16, 1894. He served as President of the New York State Federation of Labor from 1934 to 1939 when he became Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). In 1952, he became President of the AFL and helped to bring about the merger of the AFL and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1955, after 20 years of division and bitter rivalry.

George Meany served as a United States delegate to the United Nations in 1957 and 1959. He was presented the Medal of Freedom in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. George Meany passed away in 1980.

Therefore in view of this service to the labor movement, it is fitting that Cross Bay Boulevard, between 158th and 159th Avenues, be named "George Meany Boulevard."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
