MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS RECIPIENTS OF 1999 HUNDRED YEAR ASSOCIATION PUBLIC SERVICE AWARDS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani; William J. Diamond, Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services; and Richard A. Cook, President of the Hundred Year Association of New York, announced today the recipients of the 1999 Hundred Year Association Public Service Awards. At a City Hall ceremony, the Mayor honored 18 City employees and 29 children of City employees who will receive public service awards and college scholarships totaling over $80,000 from the Association and its member organizations.

Each year, the Hundred Year Association reviews the achievements of City employees to identify public servants who, through dedication beyond their job descriptions, have provided outstanding service to the people of New York City. A committee made up of representatives of the Association and the City chooses the winners.

"This annual New York City tradition represents a vital and positive spirit of cooperation between City government and private organizations," the Mayor said. "The awards reflect the fact that a career in public service is a noble calling that can be as rewarding as it is challenging. The public servants singled out today for recognition are representative of the great many City employees who give of themselves beyond what their job requires. And, as the students we honor today demonstrate, a commitment to public service is often passed along to our children."

Mr. Cook said, "These outstanding students are a product of our great City, they are a product of City schools, and they are a product of our dedicated New York City civil service employees. All New Yorkers should be proud of their accomplishments."

Commissioner Diamond said, "These individuals not only exemplify the best in public service, they make a difference in their communities. As a result of their dedication, this City is a better place to live and work."

The Hundred Year Association -- founded in 1927 and comprised of business, professional, educational, religious and charitable organizations that have been in continuous operation in New York City for over a century -- has honored career civil service employees for over 40 years. In addition, for the past 28 years, the Association has awarded college scholarships to the children of City employees for outstanding academic achievement and community service.

In addition to the Association's awards, there are several member-sponsored awards funded by: Amalgamated Bank of New York; Atlantic Mutual Companies; The Bank of New York; Bowne of New York City; The Chief-Leader; Consolidated Edison of New York; Dancker Sellew & Douglas; The Dime Savings Bank of New York, FSB; E-J Electric Installation Co.; Emigrant Savings Bank; Emmet, Marvin & Martin; Hagedorn & Company; Hunter College (CUNY); Independence Community Foundation; James Thompson & Co.; KeySpan Energy; M & T Bank, New York City Division; New York University; Oratorio Society of New York; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; Robertson Personnel; Schieffelin & Somerset Co.; and Scientific American.

Recipients of public service awards received $1,000 to $5,000. Children of City employees received $1,000 to $4,500 college scholarships.
