MAYOR GIULIANI TEES OFF AT 5th ANNUAL OAK RIDGE OPEN TO BENEFIT FOREST PARK

Mayor Giuliani today participated in the Oak Ridge Open, a golf tournament benefiting Forest Park. The Mayor joined over 100 other golfers on the eighteen-hole Forest Park Golf Course. Before the tee-off, the Mayor presented the 102nd Precinct with two mountain bikes, donated by the Forest Park Trust, to assist the police in patrolling the Park's 538 acres.

"Forest Park is a flagship in the City's Parks system," Mayor Giuliani said. "Today, not only are we supporting its long-term growth through this tournament, but the bicycles donated to the 102nd Precinct will help the police patrol the park's drives and terrain, helping to ensure that people can enjoy this green jewel safely."

"Forest Park is one of the most beautiful places in New York City, a Queens treasure. Its 538 acres of wilderness are both a natural haven and an important recreational resource. Today's event shows just how well this park is supported by its surrounding communities, and just how important it is to the City of New York," said Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern.

Over one hundred years old, Forest Park is one of New York City's largest parks and it serves several Queens communities, including Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and Glendale. It features tennis, basketball and handball courts, ballfields, playgrounds, a carousel and significant natural areas.

Forest Park has recently benefited from a variety of capital projects, including a $3.2 million reconstruction of the George Seuffert Bandshell. In 1998, the Forest Park Trust was formed to coordinate programs and projects that will enhance, maintain and promote the park. All proceeds from the Oak Ridge Open will go to the Trust to fund park improvements. The last golf tournament raised $12,000 for the park.
