MAYOR GIULIANI KICKS OFF 1999-2000 SCHOOL YEAR

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani welcomed New York City School Chancellor Rudy Crew, students from various districts, their parents and teachers to Gracie Mansion this morning to celebrate the start of the 1998-1999 school year. The Mayor was also joined by Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra, CUNY Trustee Herman Badillo, and Board of Education Member Irene Impellizzeri, as well as community leaders.

"Every fall, we gather here to celebrate student achievement, and to recommit ourselves to making great strides together in the new school year. There's so much for students, parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, and Chancellor Crew to be proud. There's so much more for us all to accomplish. We need to teach children to read better, enhance math skills, teach history, science and computer literacy and more," the Mayor said.

"I want to make a special mention of the programs represented here today: Highbridge Unity Center; the Henry Street Urban Family Center; the Jennie A. Clarke Residence and the City's Partners in Reading Program. They share a very important vision of helping children learn by including their families at the same time... by encouraging mothers and fathers to take a proactive role in their children's education. Children learn best when everyone in the family is focused on learning, and sometimes when everyone in the family is learning and achieving together," the Mayor added.

"I also want to thank all the educators who work hard every day to make a difference in the lives of our children. And most of all, I want to congratulate our children, for the accomplishments of past years and for their commitment to make this new year a successful on, one that will set the pace for the new millenium," the Mayor concluded.

The 1999-2000 school year opens on Thursday, September 9, 1999 citywide.
