MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES NYC 2000 FASHION SHOW

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and NYC 2000, the official New York City Millennium Committee, today announced details for the NYC 2000 Fashion Show - one of the largest group fashion shows ever held in New York. Close to ninety of the world's most renowned fashion designers will create original, millennial looks, specifically for the NYC 2000 show, to be revealed on an outdoor runway in Times Square on the evening of Monday, September 13th, 1999.

"When close to ninety of the world's most talented and renowned designers contribute their time and energy to celebrate New York City, it is a testimonial that we are truly the Fashion Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. "The fact that this landmark fashion event is being paired with an important gesture of commitment to the artistic education of young New Yorkers is both appropriate and appreciated. It is an important opportunity to set the stage for the next millennium."

The Mayor also announced that the millennium creations will be auctioned off at a later date, with proceeds going to support New York City public school education through the Center for Arts Education/New York City Annenberg Challenge for Arts Education. Joining the Mayor at the press conference were fashion designer Donna Karan; Chairman of the Board for The Center for Arts Education Laurie Tisch Sussman; President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Stan Herman; Chairman of the Fashion Show, Donald Trump; international model and a participating host of the NYC 2000 Fashion Show, Vendela; and Millennium Committee member and President of Nicole Miller, Bud Konheim. Many of the participating designers were on hand as well.

The NYC 2000 Fashion Show will feature one-of-a-kind designer looks presented on a large outdoor runway, worn by some of the world's top models and most recognized celebrities. Currently scheduled to strut the catwalk include models Esther Canadas, Mark Vanderloo, Roshumba, and actress Angie Harmon. Vendela, an internationally known model will perform hosting duties at the fashion show and live entertainment will be provided by award winning singer Trisha Yearwood.

The Center for Arts Education is a not-for-profit organization committed to restoring and sustaining arts education as an essential part of every child's education in New York City public schools. The Center was formed more than three years ago to address the removal of arts from most of New York City's public schools during the fiscal crisis of the 1970's. In March 1996, the Annenberg Foundation awarded a five-year, $12 million challenge grant to fund The New York City Annenberg Challenge for Arts Education and to establish The Center for Arts Education. The Center is in the process of raising $24 million from public and private sources to meet this challenge.

With over 15,000 fashion-related establishments and 225,000 employees, the fashion industry is one of New York City's largest employers and generates $19 billion in economic activity. New York City is not only the nation's number-one host of fashion shows for world-renowned and established designers, it is also home to thousands of the world's up-and-coming designers who have trained in one of New York's eight prestigious schools dedicated to fashion and design.

The NYC 2000 Fashion Show is free, open to the public and will begin at 8:00 PM on Monday, September 13th, coinciding with the start of Fashion Week in New York City. Spectators should arrive by 7:30 PM and enter the Times Square area through 44th Street and 7th Avenue for best viewing.
