MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES THE DELIVERY OF 16,285 NEW SCHOOL SEATS FOR THE 1999-2000 SCHOOL YEAR

Turns Over Keys For New School Addition At P.S. 149 In Jackson Heights

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) is delivering 16,285 new school seats citywide for the 1999-2000 school year. The extra chairs further alleviate overcrowding in the school system.

At a ceremony in Queens, the Mayor turned a set of new keys over to school personnel for a new $8 million addition at P.S. 149 - The Christa McAuliffe School. The expansion will provide the school with additional 375 seats and enable children who were housed a t another facility to rejoin their school community. Using the latest in modular construction technology, the SCA completed the new school addition in 14 months.

The majority of the new seats built by the SCA are located in Queens and the Bronx, where overcrowding is the most severe. The Bronx is getting 5,801 new seats, Queens 5,023, Brooklyn 3269, Manhattan 1424 and Staten Island 768. In addition to the SCA total, the Board of Education also directly produced approximately 1,700 new school seats citywide.

The new three-story addition to P.S. 149 contains approximately 25,700 square feet and includes 14 classrooms, a library, cafeteria and elevator. The school is fully air conditioned and handicapped accessible. The existing school, which was built in 1926, is currently serving a student population of ----, in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The school is named in memory of Christa McAliffe, a schoolteacher who lost her life in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1985.

Accepting the keys for the new addition from Mayor Giuliani were P.S. 149 student ----, Principal Milady Baez and Community School District 30 Superintendent Angelo Gimondo.

P.S. 49 is one of 11 new additions that the SCA has built in Queens for the new school year. Community School District 24, the most crowded district in the Cuty is getting new additions at P.S. 68 in Ridgewood, I.S. 119 in Glendale, and P.S. 229 in Woodside. Community school district 25 is receiving additions at P.S. 21 and P.S. 210, both in Flushing. In Community school District 27, there are new additions coming on line at P. S. 97 in Woodhaven and and at J.H.S. 210 in Ozone Park. Community School District 28 is receiving one addition at P.S. 117 in Jamaica and Community School 29 is getting an addition at P.S. 135 in Queens Village and another at P.S. 138 in Rosedale.

Over the past decade, the SCA has provided the City's school system with almost 100,000 new seats, enough to accommodate the entire school populations of san Francisco and Seattle. More than 40 percent of those new seats were delivered by SCA over the past three years.
