MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI PRESENTS OFFICIAL NOMINATION CERTIFICATES TO NEW YORK AREA PRIME TIME EMMY NOMINEES

James Gandolfini, Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco from HBO's The Sopranos, and Sam Waterston and Steven Hill from NBC's Law & Order Among the Nominees

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today presented official nomination certificates to the New York area nominees for the 51st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The Mayor was joined by Patricia Reed Scott, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting; Meryl Marshall, Chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and over 70 television industry professionals, including actors Steven Hill and Sam Waterston from Law & Order and James Gandolfini, Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco from The Sopranos.

"New York City has an unparalleled wealth of talent. Their contribution to the television industry over the years has helped to make New York City, the Entertainment Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. "Television production employment and revenues in New York continue growing at unprecedented record levels and today, we recognize those who have excelled in the highly competitive field of television."

New York's television talent earned over 70 nominations for the 1999 Prime Time Emmy Awards. Among the shows nominated are:

Since 1998, the number of primetime shows produced in the city has more than doubled. In addition to "Cosby," "Spin City," "Law & Order," "Oz," "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City," the following series will shoot entirely in New York City and premiere this fall: Third Watch for NBC; Now & Again for CBS; Bellevue for ABC; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for NBC; Talk to Me for ABC; The Beat for UPN 9 and Bulls for TNT.

For the fifth consecutive year, New York City has set records for television production. Television production shooting days have increased by 113 percent since 1993, from 3,598 to 7,680 in 1998. Direct expenditures for television totaled 1.2 billion dollars in 1998.

The 51st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Show will be held on Sunday, September 12 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California and will air on the FOX Television Network.
