MAYOR GIULIANI SALUTES THE DOMINICAN COMMUNITY AND PROCLAIMS DOMINICAN DAY PARADE WEEK

Celebrates Contributions of Dominicans to New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today welcomed members of the New York Dominican community to Gracie Mansion for a ceremony honoring the achievements and heritage of the Dominican community in New York City. The Mayor presented a proclamation to Parade President Nelson Pena declaring the week of August 15 as Dominican Day Parade Week in New York City. The ceremony was part of a series of events leading up to the Dominican Day Parade on Sunday. Also in attendance were Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra and Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington.

"I am pleased to welcome the Dominican Day Parade Committee to Gracie Mansion as we join New York City's Dominican community to honor its proud history and heritage and celebrate the many contributions Dominican New Yorkers have made to every area of life in our City," Mayor Giuliani said.

"While Dominicans maintain pride in their native land, they also add to New York City's cultural diversity and economic strength. The growth of the community is a reflection of the success of New York City and part of the extraordinary transformation of our City into the Capital of the World," the Mayor added.

The 18th Annual Dominican Day Parade will be held on Sunday, August 15th, along Sixth Avenue from 36th Street to 58th Street in Manhattan. The parade is the highlight of a series of cultural events celebrated throughout the City to honor Dominican heritage.

This year, the Dominican community commemorates the 136th anniversary of the restoration of its Constitution on August 16, 1863, when a group of patriots led by Santiago Rodriguez crossed the Dominican border from Haiti and raised the Dominican flag.
