MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "ANNE McGARVEY WAY," TO SAMPSON AVENUE IN STATEN ISLAND

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 475, sponsored by Council Members Fiala, Abel and Golden, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Anne McGarvey Way," to Sampson Avenue, between Lamoka Avenue and Katan Avenue in Staten Island.

Anne McGarvey was one of the first advocates for senior citizens rights, and through her efforts starting in the early 1970's, she was known as a pioneer for seniors. She lent her support and active assistance to help the City open a new senior citizen center in Staten Island called the Great Kills Friendship Club. She continued working with the Department for the Aging to help open additional Friendship Clubs that now span across Staten Island. Her understanding and concern for the needs of seniors made her facilities places where seniors could enjoy themselves and remain active in their communities.

Anne McGarvey passed away in 1998.

Therefore, in view of her dedication to serving the seniors of Staten Island, it is fitting that Sampson Avenue, from Lamoka Avenue to Katan Avenue, be renamed "Anne McGarvey Way."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
