MAYOR GIULIANI APPROVES PLAN TO BUILD ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT BLOOMINGDALE PARK IN STATEN ISLAND

43 Acres Of Park Land Will Be Developed For Outdoor Athletic Facilities

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, joined by Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari and Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, today announced that a plan has been approved to build athletic fields at Bloomingdale Park in Staten Island. The project, which will occupy 45 of the park's 138 undeveloped acres, will include: soccer fields, Little League fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a comfort station and a parking lot.

The Mayor's announcement came in response to a request made by Staten island residents during his April 27th Town Hall Meeting for use of part of the park for athletic fields.

"I am happy to report that, after a thorough site visit to Bloomingdale Park last week, I have approved a proposed plan to build athletic fields in this area," the Mayor said. "We are looking forward to the new ball fields and other recreational facilities at Bloomingdale Park that will turn a field of dreams into a reality for our children."

Borough President Molinari said, "I join with all Staten Islanders in thanking Mayor Rudy Giuliani for his support in approving the Bloomingdale Park proposal for athletic fields. Thanks to the Mayor, Staten Island children will have a sorely needed new place to play baseball and soccer. The Mayor has recognized that Bloomingdale Park will serve Staten Island's fastest growing area and provide opportunities for recreation where there are far too few to meet the enormous demand."

Parks Commissioner Henry Stern said, "The new ball fields will greatly increase recreational opportunities for Staten Islanders. Parks will design the best possible fields, with minimal intrusion to natural features."

The site for the proposed athletic fields plan was acquired by the City in 1968 and has never been developed.
