MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "VETERANS MEMORIAL TRIANGLE" TO A STREET TRIANGLE LOCATED AT 225TH STREET, 143RD AVENUE, AND NORTH CONDUIT AVENUE, IN QUEENS

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 542, is sponsored by Council Members Watkins, Abel and six of their colleagues. This bill would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the designation "Veterans Memorial Triangle" to a street triangle located at 225th Street, 143rd Avenue and North Conduit Avenue, in Queens.

The proposed triangle is maintained by the members of the Colonel Edward O. Guordin Post Number 5298 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and is the site of a flagpole on which both the United States and the POW/MIA flags are flown year round.

At this location the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post holds memorial services on Veterans' Day and at the closing ceremonies of the Laurelton Annual Memorial Day Parade. The Memorial Day Ceremony has been held at this site since 1989 and honors the fallen heroes of World War I, World War II, the conflicts of Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Lebanon, Grenada and Panama.

Therefore, because of the special significance of this triangle to the Laurelton community, it is fitting that the street triangle located at 225th Street, 143rd Avenue and North Conduit Avenue, be named "Veterans Memorial Triangle."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
