MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "FLORENCE SEMPLE WAY" ON BOWEN STREET BETWEEN SOBEL COURT AND ROFF STREET IN STATEN ISLAND

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 397, sponsored by Council Member O'Donovan, would add through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Florence Semple Way" on Bowen Street between Sobel Court and Roff Street in Staten Island.

Florence E. Semple was born on August 14, 1922 in New Brighton in Staten Island. She was raised in Tompkinsville and educated at Public School 16, Curtis High School, and later attended Staten Island and Kingsborough Community Colleges. Ms. Semple was an active participant in church activities and held various church positions, including President of the Missionary Board at First Central Baptist Church. She was also a community activist, which included efforts to organize tenants to advance drug-free buildings. As a result of her success in the fight against drugs, she became President of the 120th Precinct Community Council.

Ms. Semple also worked to promote positive race relations in Staten Island. For many years she was involved with the Staten Island Branch of the NAACP and the Staten Island Branch of the New York Urban League. On March 25, 1998, Florence Semple passed away at the age of 75.

In recognition of her years of devoted service to the Borough of Staten Island, it is appropriate that Bowen Street between Sobel Court and Roff Street where she lived be called "Florence Semple Way."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
