MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REGARDING NEW YORK CITY'S MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO THE LATE JOE DIMAGGIO

"I commend and thank Governor Pataki for his decision today to rename the West Side Highway as a lasting tribute to Joe DiMaggio, and for putting the interest of Joe DiMaggio's family first. This is an appropriate way to honor a man of dignity, and class, and a great friend to New York City.

It would be unfortunate for anyone to suggest that politics played a role in our recent discussions. The Governor and I have been in complete agreement, from the start, that any memorial tribute to the great Yankee Clipper should be consistent with his family's wishes.
