MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI JOINS FIRE COMMISSIONER THOMAS VON ESSEN
AT GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 149 PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS

Today, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen at a graduation ceremony for 149 Probationary Firefighters. The new Firefighters -- or "Probys" as they are sometimes called -- have successfully completed a rigorous 13-week training program that will prepare them for the many challenges that await them in their new careers.

"I am confident that these new Firefighters will show themselves to be highly skilled in fire operations, they will demonstrate over and over that they are selfless and dedicated, willing to risk their lives for those in need. Their efforts will continue to help the Fire Department do what it does best -- protect the lives and property of all New Yorkers," the Mayor said.

"The Probationary Firefighters here today have embarked on a very rewarding yet often challenging career. Over the last 13 weeks you have learned that fire fighting is one of the most difficult and demanding jobs imaginable. Your dedication and your perseverance through the sometimes grueling and exhausting training shows that you are committed to providing New York City with the best fire protection in the world," Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen said.

During the ceremony, several achievement awards were presented. They included: Valedictorian, Firefighter Michael Wortman; Salutatorian, Firefighter Kevin Fitzpatrick; Physical Fitness Award, Firefighter Thomas Cleary; and the Chief of Training Award, Firefighter Kevin Farrelly.
