Catherine A. Rashke was born on March 2, 1914 in the Highbridge section of The Bronx. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School, she went on to receive a Doctorate in Education from New York University.
In 1932, Dr. Rashke started as a substitute teacher, in the upper and lower grades, until 1940, when she was assigned as a regular substitute in Junior High School 113X. During the next 20 years she taught a variety of subjects in addition to sponsoring after-school activities. In June of 1952, Dr. Rashke was appointed Assistant Principal at the newly opened Junior High School 125X and in 1957, she was appointed Principal at P.S. 14 where she served until her retirement on August 30, 1978. At the time of her retirement, she had served more than 43 years in the New York City Public School System.
On April 15, 1998, Dr. Catherine Rashke passed away. In light of her dedication to children and to the education system of New York City, it is fitting that the corner of Hollywood Avenue and the Bruckner Boulevard Service Road South, be named "Dr. Catherine Rashke Plaza."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
