Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's Statement on CUNY Trustees Vote to Reform Remedial Education at CUNY Senior Colleges:

"Once again the CUNY Trustees have demonstrated their commitment to reform remedial education and I congratulate them for this courageous vote. The pressure to defeat the proposal was strong and the Trustees should take great pride for defending their belief in fairness and excellence in education.

With this vote, CUNY starts the important process of restoring its reputation as one of the great public institutions of higher learning in the country. CUNY students and prospective students should support the trustees in their effort to bring accountability and responsibility to the system.

The reform will result in a more rewarding and valuable college education, and a college degree that will be of greater value when students seek jobs after graduation. Tonight's vote will enable students to get remedial help before they enroll in a senior college, while making sure that all students are assured a first class public college education at CUNY."
