"The new Hunts Point Youth Community Center will serve as an invaluable resource to the Hunts Point community, as we continue to provide new opportunities for our City's young people to make the right decisions that will lead to fulfilling and productive lives," said Mayor Giuliani.
Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra will head up an inter-agency task force that will work closely with local leaders to locate the new facility at one of several sites in the Hunts point area now under discussion. Accordingly, the City has allocated approximately $4 million for the construction of the new facility, which will provide after school recreational and educational programs for youngsters between 6 and 18 years of age. It is expected that the new facility will be ready for occupancy in two years.
In addition to the construction of the new Hunts Point Youth Community Center, the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center will receive a $7 million facelift as part of the City's plan to re-occupy the facility, in order to meet the rising capacity demands of its juvenile justice system. The renovation will include upgrades in the building's electrical and ventilation systems and new services, which will result in an enhanced environment for detained youth.
