DEPUTY MAYOR JOSEPH J. LHOTA ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REGARDING NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR WHITMAN'S COMMENTS ON THE MAYOR'S WASTE MANAGEMENT PROPOSAL:

Deputy Mayor Joseph J. Lhota said, "It is our fault, and not Governor Whitman's, that she did not understand New York City's environmentally sound plan for long-term solid waste management. The Governor and her staff were not adequately briefed in a complete manner. I have called Governor Whitman's office requesting an opportunity to brief the Governor and her staff in detail.

"I am confident that once the Governor and her staff understand the specifics of the New York City proposal, they will see that the City has no intention of dumping garbage on New Jersey's beaches. In fact, the City agrees that no permits should be granted to facilities that pose any threat to New Jersey's environment."
