NEW YORK CITY'S RECORD JOB GROWTH CONTINUES

City Gains More Private Sector Jobs

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani announced today that 4,700 private sector jobs were created in New York City in October, following the previous month's gain of 4,200 jobs. The new positions bring private employment up to 91,700 jobs, a 3.1 percent increase over October of 1997. From December to October, the private sector has added 89,400 jobs and has now added 275,500 jobs since December of 1993. The unemployment rate remained basically unchanged in October at 7.9 percent.

"The health of New York City's economic renaissance is evident in today's employment news," said Mayor Giuliani. "The quality of life for New Yorkers has improved greatly since 1993, when crime and taxes were out of control. Our success continues to attract businesses and employers and is keeping us competitive," the Mayor concluded.
