Linton Cummings was born on February 6, 1926, in Jamaica, West Indies. In 1964, seeking a better life, Linton Cummings relocated to New York City. While studying for his degree in Accounting, he was asked by Price Waterhouse, an audit firm, to create an accounting system for a fledgling organization called the Higher Education Development Fund (HEDF). The primary purpose of this organization was to assist school dropouts in attaining General Education diplomas and college and employment placement. Mr. Cummings' work was so impressive that he was named Vice President of HEDF in 1972 and two years later was named President.
Through his work as a community activist, Linton Cummings left his mark on society. He helped establish the Fish-Bay Neighborhood Association which, through the years, was instrumental in instituting many quality of life initiatives. His commitment to community service is demonstrated by the many organizations that he created, served, and with which he was affiliated.
Tragically, Linton Cummings passed away on June 2, 1996.
In recognition of Linton J. Cummings' many years of devoted service, it is fitting that this bill would add the name "Linton J. Cummings Square" to the intersection of Givans and Fish Avenues in The Bronx.
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
