Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today shared a lesson about the unification of the five boroughs into New York City with an audience of 250 students, grades 1 through 6, at the Ramaz School in Manhattan, to commemorate the City's centennial. Led by school principal Susan Mukasey, a group of 4th and 5th graders welcomed the Mayor with a performance of New York, New York.
"New York City's rich history is one of our most valued treasures," Mayor Giuliani said. "Your interest in learning more about how this City began and how it has become the greatest City in the World should be a source of pride to your parents, your teachers and your communities. I commend your efforts and thank you for this wonderful opportunity of sharing with all of you one of my favorite subjects."
School Principal Susan Mukasey said, "The Mayor has been visiting the Ramaz School for many years, but this year's visit is particularly memorable because it honors our yearlong theme Happy Birthday New York - 100 years."
After answering student's questions about the City, its history and the unique elements that make New York, the Capital of the World, the Mayor visited the school's kindergarten class.
The students surprised the Mayor with a 5-tiered cake, each representing a borough, to celebrate the City's centennial.
