MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT AMENDS THE CITY CHARTER IN RELATION TO AUTHORIZING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXTEND THE EXISTING FRANCHISE AGREEMENT FOR THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF BUS STOP SHELTERS

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws

The bill before me this afternoon is Introductory 408-A, sponsored by Council Members Eisland, McCaffrey, and Pinkett. This bill would amend the New York City Charter in relation to authorizing the Department of Transportation (DOT) to extend the date of the existing franchise for the operation and maintenance of bus stop shelters to December 31, 1999.

This bill would allow DOT to work with the existing franchise to provide for the installation and maintenance of bus stop shelters in the coming year, while ensuring that the City continues to receive revenues from the advertising placed on these shelters.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
