MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES RATIFICATION OF LABOR ACCORD WITH SANITATION OFFICERS' ASSOCIATION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Joseph Mannion, President of the Sanitation Officers' Association ("SOA"), today announced that a contract has been ratified by the nearly 1,200 member Sanitation Officers' Association for a successor collective bargaining agreement covering the period from May 31, 1995 through September 30, 2000.

The settlement, which the Union members overwhelmingly ratified in a vote of 703 "For" - 179 "Against", almost a 4:1 margin, is consistent with the pattern established in all earlier citywide civilian settlements reached in this round of bargaining and with the settlements reached with the Uniformed Firefighters Association, the Uniformed Fire Officers' Association, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association Impasse Panel recommendation, the Assistant Deputy Wardens/Deputy Wardens Association, the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, and the recently announced tentative agreement with the Sergeants Benevolent Association and the Detectives Endowment Association.

"The City is pleased to announce that, with this settlement, we are continuing our commitment to fiscal prudence while the Sanitation Officers' Union achieves beneficial results for its members," Mayor Giuliani said. "Sanitation Officers are on the streets every day supervising and directing the highly important work being done by our Sanitation Workers. The City of New York has many deserving employees whose hard work provides the vital energy which keeps the City running in the right direction. I want to congratulate President Mannion and his negotiating staff, as well as Labor Commissioner James F. Hanley and his staff for their efforts in reaching this agreement."

The SOA agreement covers the titles of Supervisor (Sanitation) and General Superintendent (Level I) (Sanitation).
