MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "ERASMUS 'MIKE' NAPOLITANO CORNER" TO THE INTERSECTION OF WOODHULL AND HENRY STREETS IN BROOKLYN

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws

The bill now before me is Introductory Number 162, sponsored by Council Members DiBrienza, Fusco, O'Donovan and Robles. This bill would add through the posting of an additional sign the name "Erasmus 'Mike' Napolitano Corner" at the southwest corner of the intersection of Woodhull Street and Henry Street, Brooklyn.

Mike Napolitano was a lifelong resident and community activist in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn. His generosity and community awareness stretched to many aspects of his neighborhood. Living in a predominantly Italian neighborhood, Mike used his bilingual skills to assist those who could not read or write English. He also worked hand-in-hand with the 76th Precinct to improve safety in local parks and to make the areas around local schools safer by successfully lobbying for additional patrols at student dismissal time. Mike also was involved with arranging transportation in and around the community for elderly and disabled neighbors.

Mike Napolitano received numerous awards for his contributions to his community, including being named Brooklyn's "Republican of the Year."

Mike Napolitano died in 1997, three months shy of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his daughter Grace.

In recognition of Erasmus 'Mike' Napolitano's many years of dedicated service to the people of Carroll Gardens and the surrounding communities, it is appropriate to designate the southwest corner at the intersection of Woodhull Street and Henry Street as "Erasmus 'Mike' Napolitano Corner."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
