STATEMENT BY MAYOR GIULIANI REGARDING THE DEATH OF TONY AVENA

"Tony Avena was a role model for all New Yorkers. At 83 years-old, he had more energy and love of life than many of us can ever hope to have. He woke up every morning to go to work at Tony's Shoe Shine Parlor, a business his family held for over 75 years, and gave the best shoe-shines in New York City. During his second year at St. John's University, Tony gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer when his father died unexpectedly, and stepped into the role of provider for his mother, brothers and sisters. Tony was in a class all by himself, working hard for his neighborhood, and most importantly, for his family. His smile will be missed by all."
