MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS AWARDS TO SEVEN TOP SENIORS AT "DISTINGUISHED HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES" AWARDS CEREMONY
162 High School Seniors Honored At the Third Annual Ceremony
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew tonight honored 162 outstanding graduating seniors from New York City public high schools at the third annual Distinguished High School Graduates awards
ceremony held at the Surrogates Court House in Lower Manhattan. The Mayor presented awards to the seven Top Seniors who each represented one of seven districts throughout the City.
"You are not only the leaders of tomorrow, you are the leaders of today. You set the standard of performance academically, socially and morally, and by setting those standards high, you raise the standards for everyone. I want to thank you for your commitment and example to your school, your community, and your City. Congratulations on this tremendous achievement," the Mayor said.
Joining the Mayor were Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra; Youth and Community Development Commissioner, Martin Oesterreich; Board of Education member, Irene Impellizzeri; and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New York Vice President, Don Thomas. Also in attendance were the honored students and their family members.
"We want everyone to know how proud we are of these exemplary seniors. I commend all of you for your commitment to your education and your communities. Each of you is extraordinary in your interest in helping others and your drive to do well. You are an inspiration to us all," Deputy Mayor Segarra said.
All Distinguished Graduates were chosen through a vigorous selection process. High Schools from around the City nominated students who met three criteria: academic excellence, commitment to community service, and extra-curricular activities and leadership skills. The Top Seniors were selected through the joint collaboration of Deputy Mayor Segarra, Dr. Impellizzeri and the high school superintendents.
The Distinguished Graduates were each awarded certificates of recognition from the Mayor. The Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New York sponsored this year's event and donated a $250 scholarship check to each of the seven Top Seniors.
